Catching Up With Andrea Evans (Rebecca)

Soap veteran Andrea Evans is relishing her role as bad-girl Rebecca Hotchkiss. In our exclusive interview, find out what she thinks about her racy costumes, how she feels about Ben Masters, and why she's "Mary Ann trapped in Ginger's body!"

You're a soap veteran at this point. How does your experience on 'Passions' differ from your experience on other soaps?
Every show has it's own feel and flavor, so they're all different in that respect. They all have their own style. And of course, 'Passions' has things like dolls and witches, so it's a little different that way! But they also all have very similar things. This is also my first new show. It just has more of a feel of everyone working towards the same things-which is to get the show of the ground and doing well.

What first inspired you to become an actress?
It's all I've ever done. I was ten when I started. I just always had a desire to be creative. My mother's a pianist, so we were always very interested in the arts. It just kind of developed and the opportunities came so we took them. It's not like I did this full time when I was a child. I had a pretty normal childhood in spite of the fact that I was in the business. My parents are great. They are not "stage parents" at all!

Is it fun playing someone so mean?
It's always fun playing a 'bad girl.' I don't know if 'mean' is Rebecca's main characteristic. But bad girls are a lot more fun to play than good girls. I've made a career out of playing bad girls!

What would be your dream story for Rebecca?
I'd love to have her become a corporate head honcho of something. I think it would be great fun. I've never played that.

What three words would you use to describe Rebecca?
Smart naughty vixen.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
That's a lot harder! Sweet, nice, and wonderful, of course! I am quite the opposite of Rebecca. I was joking with Mike, the cameraman, who's one of my best friends. He always jokes that I'm Mary Ann stuck in Ginger's body! And in some ways that describes me to a tee.

What have been your favorite scenes to perform on 'Passions?'
I always enjoy working with Kim and Ben. I enjoy the chemistry and the banter back and forth. Those opportunities have been fun. I also really enjoy working with Natalie Zea.

The 'Passions' cast always has a lot to say about working with Ben Masters. What are your two cents?
I love working with Ben! It's fun working with someone who likes to be as campy and outlandish as I do, because I enjoy that. I think our minds work a bit alike-we're both a little sick and twisted!

What kind of relationship do you have with Natalie?
We get along very well. We have a very nice chemistry. I enjoy working with her. She's like a sponge. She just takes in everything, since this is her first television role. When you work with someone who's more experienced in a certain medium, there's a certain way to learn from them. And I think she does that. She picks up on things really quickly.

You and Ben have done some pretty racy scenes. What's it like doing them?
You mean like the belly dancing scene?! I've been doing those kinds of scenes for a long time. They're always a little embarrassing because I'm so not that. I've spent many years playing that, so it's just part of my workday. I spend a lot more time at the gym!

Rebecca's costumes are very sexy. Do you have input into Rebecca's costumes?
I have some, but Jane ((Janiger, 'Passions' Costume Designer) does such a great job. Rebecca definitely has a certain look. She's quite proud of her assets and likes to show them off. I like that because already on the show Ivy is in the classy suits. And Grace and Pilar are more down-played. You have to develop your own look. And Rebecca's niche is as quite the little vixen!

Are there any similarities between you and Rebecca?
We're both smart. I think so anyway! What bad stuff Rebecca does, there's a good reason for it in there. I can relate to that-protecting one's own family. There are better ways to go about it, though!

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Acting. I love what I do. I love my job. I want to be working, have a family and a nice home life.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not at work?
Since I'm Mary Ann trapped in Ginger's body, today I'm refinishing my patio furniture! I'm extremely domesticated. I love my home, my family, and my dog who's out here right now. I'm just the antithesis of little nasty Rebecca!

Are there any particular charities you like to work with?
Absolutely. I do a lot for City of Hope, with their breast cancer walk. I traveled to Chicago for it. I did it in San Diego and in Los Angeles. I'm currently talking to them about taking a more advanced position with them to do more work.

What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
That I'm a bookworm. Right now I'm reading 'Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fate of Human Society.' It's a Pulitzer Prize winning book about why certain societies excel faster, how societies have gone in and out over time. It's a very fascinating book by Jared Diamond.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment?
I like to think an accomplishment is just trying to be a good, nice Christian person which I try to be. I try very hard to be that. Technically, I think I'm quite proud and happy that after a few rough years due to circumstances we're all aware of, I was able to go on with my life and get beyond that. I'm quite proud of that.

If you had one wish, what would it be?
I would wish for people to be as happy as I am right now.
